Loving Life in St. Joseph County

I

‘ve lived in St. Joseph County all my life, and love many things about it. We have small, very close communities, numerous public parks, many inland lakes, a vast Amish community, and plenty of farm land. Farming is a huge part of St. Joseph County. As a teenager, I detasseled corn. My husband works at Mendon Seed Growers, a local seed corn company who plants thousands of acres of seed corn each year. We also farm 20 acres ourselves. My Amish heritage has influenced me greatly, so I truly appreciate their way of life. They are a great community of people with very strong values. There are many Amish and Mennonite businesses in our county, ranging from handcrafted furniture to homemade baked goods, and anything in between. Yoder’s Store in Centreville is a prime example of the pride they put into their work. It has thrived and grown in recent years, and they specialize in homemade goods and deli service.

Go Sailing!

I

recently found a new love:  sailing! Before moving to the coast of Alabama, I knew that sailing was to be high on my list of “must do”. If you’ve never experienced this peaceful yet exhilarating experience, put sailing on your list, too! I grew up on ski boats, john boats, kayaks, pontoons and the like. I have traveled on cruise ships, large and small. I’ve gone deep sea fishing on commercial fishing boats. I’ve even toured the USS Alabama and the USS Intrepid, but, I had never been on a sail boat!

The Fairhope Yacht Club is a beautiful building overlooking the bay at the end of Volanta St., which also boasts great homes within walking distance. Fly Creek is on the northern side of the Yacht Club with multiple boat slips as well. The club is upscale, yet surprisingly affordable and dinner there is always wonderful. Check out the Fairhope Yacht Club for adult and junior sailing classes! If you, too, have waited a life time to sail…don’t wait any longer. Go sailing!

Cobblestone Community

I

personally chose the Cobblestone community for its peaceful atmosphere and rolling hills instead of flat subdivision living.  There is a park that everyone shares. The families that live in Cobblestone enjoy gatherings at Easter and Halloween to enjoy grilling hot dogs, bonfires and gives everyone a chance to slow down and visit!  We invite our friends and families to hunt Easter eggs or dress up in crazy costumes for Halloween for all the trick or treaters to enjoy! Some of the homes back up to the golf course and some back up to the wonders of wooded bliss from Mother Nature.  The deer visit quite often! We encourage custom built homes on our available lots for sale! For golfers, enjoy two great 18 hole golf courses in Greystone. It is a great place to call “Home”!

Traffic Is Not a Problem in Enid!

J

ust yesterday I was sitting in construction traffic on one of Enid’s main roads, Owen K. Garriott. I almost laughed out loud when I realized I was getting frustrated because I was in line behind eight other cars. Eight cars! Only in Enid is eight cars considered a traffic jam and I’m reminded of that every time I’m driving in Oklahoma City or Tulsa. Buyers often ask what the commute time is from one neighborhood to a local business. That is one of the beauties of Enid; anywhere is within no more than 20 minutes of anywhere else in town, maybe 30 minutes if you hit “rush hour.” What Enid lacks in major retailers or restaurant chains, it more than makes up for in traffic, or lack thereof. I have been truly spoiled here and will miss Enid’s simpler ways when we one day move to another part of the country.
