aving been a resident of Maumelle since 1982, I have witnessed first hand the extensive growth in homes and population. In the early days, Maumelle Boulevard was a two lane road without any stoplights. The closest grocery store and gasoline was on Rodney Parham. I was employed as a CT Technologist at the University of Arkansas for Medical Science at that time. My job included being called in to the hospital to perform emergency scans. This was years before cell phones. I made many a middle of the night trips to the hospital.
I raised two children in Maumelle and am happy to say they both still live in the area. They maintain childhood friends they met playing soccer, basketball, baseball, and cheerleading. I am very proud of the new Maumelle High School but do feel sad for the graduates of Oak Grove High School who no longer have a school to call their alma mater. I find it hard to accept a red and black Hornet. At our house, Hornets were kelly green! Maumelle is the best little big town you can find to make your home.

t’s hard to think that we’ve been living in Kansas City’s beautiful Brookside area for over 30 years. We bought our first house in 1987 in Armour Hills. We paid $67K for it and our interest rate was 10%. (and we didn’t even bat an eyelash). We were elated to have our first home is such a wonderful neighborhood. We lived there for nine years and fixed up every inch of it. We added a two-car garage after getting a variance from the city.
We were in need of a second full bath for our three growing boys and decided it was time for a move just a few blocks away to Romanelli West. We stayed there for 15 years and absolutely loved living by Arno Park where the boys shot hoops with their neighborhood friends and school mates. We still reside in Brookside. We’ve been fixing up what we believe will be our last house that will hold our kids, grandkids and grand pups for years to come. Our family has grown and evolved, but the place we will always call home is Brookside! There’s no place like it and…we know that first hand!
Our son, Thomas, and his wife bought their “first” home a couple years back around the corner from our family’s first home in Armour Hills!

owntown Des Moines is a great place to live and play. I have lived down there for more than two years and I may just stay. Things are a little messy right now with all of the bridge updates and construction, but if you love a life full of action and options, downtown is a great place to be. Now is a smart time to buy down here too, because once all of the various projects are complete, purchase prices and lease rates will likely head north fast.
I utilize everything that living downtown has to offer including trails, food, entertainment, events, and it is quite convenient and a quick commute anywhere in the metro.
Downtown insights and secret information! Downtown Farmers Market – it’s coming, so here’s my advice….get there early (9:00 a.m. at the latest) to avoid parking frustration and a 1/2 mile to one mile walk. The garage at 3rd/Court is best, but only takes cash during special events and charges $5 cash only, not the usual $1/hr. Science Center Parking Garage on 5th Street is close, too.
