have been a Hickman resident for the past 17 years. I absolutely love the small-town feeling, and it is a quick 10-minute drive to South Lincoln. Hickman has grown quite a bit since I have moved here. It now has a new community center, new fire station, a Dollar General, True Value Hardware store, U-Stop Market, great shops, and restaurants. We especially love the Norris School District. Overall, it’s just a great school with amazing teachers and staff. We love the convenience of all the schools located on the same campus and a bus that stops right at our front door. Hickman is an ever-growing community especially with the new Terrace View subdivision growing to the east.

e are definitely in the Christmas mode now. Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone, but the shopping stampede is still at full speed ahead. And no, I haven’t even started my Christmas shopping yet! But that’s a topic for another day. Where was I, oh yes, shopping, stampede, and most important, family! Family activities are important any time, but especially during this time of year when there can be a lot of added stress to get so much done in so little time. An event such as the Christmas tree lighting and Santa meet and greet at the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center in downtown Ocean Springs, MS, helps us to slow things down and enjoy watching the kids eat cookies (me too, yummy cookies, especially Snickerdoodles), drink hot cocoa or cider, watch a Christmas movie on the lawn, and of course, tell Santa their heart’s desires. The cultural center is open to the public, so you could stroll through the various exhibits and get a little culture, all in the same evening! I’m a percussionist so I enjoy hearing live music every chance I get, and it doesn’t get much better than listening to the lovely vocals and saxophone accompaniment playing all of the season’s favorite tunes. If it sounds like I had a nice time, I really did. It was a joy to see the beautiful lights and warm smiles, hear that it’s Christmas time in the city and smell those delicious cookies. If you were here, you would agree. If you weren’t here, why weren’t you? You may have missed Santa, he had to run back to the North Pole, but beautiful downtown Ocean Springs is looking lovely and the warm smiles are here, free of charge, all year round. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
