Neighborhood Dear to My Heart

C

entered around Coliseum Square, the Lower Garden District neighborhood includes the nine Muses-named streets. Given the fact that one of the city’s Mardi Gras krewes is named Muses, and of which I am a proud member, I have a definite affinity for the area!  In 1810 when the city planner, Barthelemy Lafon, was asked to draw up plans for this area, Ancient Greek style was all the rage. Lafon was inspired to name some of the streets after the nine daughters of Zeus, who are the goddesses of inspiraton in Greek mythology. Often mispronounced, locals delight in challenging others for the correct pronunciation of Polymnia, Melpomene, Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Terpsichore, Thalia and Urania!
