Pine Wood Derby Cars

‘T

was the week before Christmas and all through the house not a creature is stirring, except for the Scouts. It’s the giving time of year. The time of giving and the time for building a “Pine Wood Derby Car”, that is! Yes, that is correct, the local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts troops receive their official derby car kits in mid-December. They will envision, like NASA engineers, what will make their car the fastest and look the coolest, of course. Will the traditional wedge shape work? Or should we build something completely innovative? This is important business as the official Pine Wood Derby is soon after the New Year. Wheels will need to be greased and smoothed down to prevent friction. The center of gravity and maximum weight must be precisely executed. After all, the Pine Wood Derby is something the local Scouting community looks forward to all year. It is traditionally held at the New York Military Academy gymnasium in late January. Some say it’s the most important race a “Scout Dad” will ever win! I particularly like to root for the cars that obviously had the maximum participation in building by the Scout himself.
