ost people who live in Enid can tell you that the large grain silos east of Van Buren hint at the area’s rich history; Enid was once considered the “Grain Capital of America”. What they may not know is that many Air Force residents refer to them as “The Battleships”. Instructor pilots stationed at Vance Air Force Base use the large silos as a land-navigation tool for student pilots and, from the air, these silos look a lot like battleships. Students use this reference to help them determine when they should begin key radio calls or maneuvers in flight.
