The Old Mill House in Mountain Brook

A

s a child growing up in Mountain Brook, I was always fascinated by the wooden waterwheel on the 1926 Mill House on Shades Creek on Mountain Brook Parkway!  I didn’t know the history, which at that time was not so many years in the past.  A replica built on the very foundations of an earlier grist mill, the Old Mill House first served as a tea room and was built by the Jemison Companies to promote the newly developed suburb of Mountain Brook.  It even had hitching posts for horses!  Surrounded by the grand old homes that were part of the original development of this lovely suburb south of Downtown Birmingham, the 1920’s charm remains and yet is only minutes away from what many of us believe is the best dining, shopping and amenities around.
