The Best Place in All of Kansas

P

eople who aren’t from Kansas probably don’t even know that this is here. Downtown Lawrence, that is. They probably pass the whole state off as having no real destinations. And I don’t really blame them. It’s easy to miss Kansas most of the time. “Fly-over country” they call it. Well, I think people should take a closer look at Northeast Kansas and that all starts (and ends) in Downtown Lawrence.

Downtown Lawrence consists of a stretch of restaurants, boutiques, bars, book stores, businesses, and theaters that make up the city’s main drag, and it’s supporting side-streets and parks. From recently built mid-rise condos to old stone and brick storefronts, the area is steeped in history that begins before the Civil War and has yet to be forgotten. The town was burned to the ground and many residents were killed in a raid on the town by pro-slavery raiders from Missouri led by William Quantrill in 1863. That history is recalled by the ever-present use of the term “Freestate”. Most notably, Freestate Brewery celebrates the town’s history and heritage as the state’s oldest active brewery and is known as one of the Midwest’s best restaurants.

If you’re looking to check out Lawrence, or the nearby University of Kansas, be sure to book your lodgings at the famous Eldridge Hotel. Rumored to be haunted, it is nevertheless a fantastic and elegant place to stay while enjoying the sights and tastes of the town. There is an incredible variety of restaurants to choose from, along with great shopping and entertainment, all within walking distance. Any night, the area bars, clubs, and theaters feature numerous local and national musical acts that go out of their way to play here.

Don’t miss Downtown Lawrence. It’s always been great and it’s most definitely getting better, every day!

The Secrets of Audubon Park

N

ew Orleans – it spills forth life over the banks of Mississippi River like the river itself in spring. It withholds its mysteries and secrets while it shares its festivals, celebrations and historic magnificence. I grew up coming to New Orleans as a little girl, visiting my Uncle Merrill who was medical director at Ochsner Clinic for nearly 20 years. The city has made its twists and turns over the years, but it has never been as vibrant and full of life as it is today and the high demand for residential real estate reflects that reality.

Audubon Park is an area nestled in uptown New Orleans and replete with the marvels of the Audubon Zoo and a stately, public golf course, holds many of the city’s offerings little known to visitors. Wedged between the zoo and the banks of the Mississippi River lies an area called the Fly (a reference to a demolished butterfly-shaped viewing structure on the river) with softball and soccer fields for public use. One of the most magic sites on the walk from the Fly to the golf course is a view of the zoo’s giraffes, where an unsuspecting jogger can come practically eye to eye with these majestic animals from outside the zoo’s fence as they feed near their barn within. A couple of steps past this backside view of the giraffes’ savanna looms a gigantic and very special live oak, The Tree of Life, some 250 years old.

Little over a hand’s distance away, a beautiful horse stable sits stately among another canopy of oaks and cypress with Magazine Street and the Audubon Golf Course appearing steps from the barns. Walkers, joggers, cyclists and parents with baby carriages and dogs on leashes circle the golf course as ducks, egrets and other waterfowl float or feast in the bayou built within the walking path. Elegant homes along Exposition and Walnut Streets lie hidden on the outside of the walking trail, and, without warning, St. Charles Avenue and two great universities appear, Tulane and Loyola, as the park yields to the bustle of streetcars and college students.

Come join the fun. See our city. Perhaps stay for a while. You never know what mysteries and secrets will spill forth from this 300-year old lady. And the real estate market couldn’t be better.

Fort Calhoun Is My Home!

I

grew up and lived my entire childhood life on an acreage just south of Fort Calhoun.  I started kindergarten and eventually graduated from Fort Calhoun Community Schools. Then I moved away and went off to college.  Not until after I married and had our daughter did I realize that I wanted my children to experience the same small school atmosphere that I had enjoyed.  We moved back “home” right before our daughter started preschool.  We now have a son and he, too, attends Fort Calhoun schools.  We love it here on our acreage and cannot imagine being anywhere else!
