Broken Arrow Park

I

grew up playing at Broken Arrow Park as a toddler, eating at church functions in the shelter, playing baseball on the field every week, climbing up the rocket ship (that has since been dismantled) and I even did my Eagle Scout Project in the park.  In the spring of 2013, I chose this location to take off for my first hot air balloon ride in our company balloon where we floated over the University of Kansas and landed behind the USD 497 main office.  The broken arrow is a symbol of peace and became the name of this 20 acres that was donated in 1961 through the Department of the Interior adjacent to Haskell University.

Uptown Market in North Edmond

I

really cannot stand to grocery shop. It seems the time it takes is always cutting into my fun.   And, I simply don’t want to fight massive crowds or have to sift through days-old produce to find fresh.  Or park a mile away for bread and milk.  The Uptown Market located in North Edmond across from Mitch Park has changed all that!  With a side entrance for quick “pop-bys” I found myself stopping by today to pick up a delicious single salad to take to the office with me.  While checking out, I was informed by the clerk that there would be a painting class offered there later this week!  At the grocery store.  That’s truly what I call a one-stop-shop! I’m a fan!  You will be, too.

“Lick Skillet” – Yes, You Heard Me Right, the Town Is Called “Lick Skillet”

T

here is a community just northwest of Hazel Green known as Lick Skillet.  It is a fun place to talk about.  Downtown Lick Skillet is at the intersection of Charity Lane and Butter & Egg Road.  About all you will find in Lick Skillet are some storage buildings and a 4,200 square foot rustic building owned by Don Williams. Most folks around call it the Music Barn.  Some nights, guest might enjoy a local country band.  Other nights, it may be bluegrass or gospel. There may even be an auction.  And, there is cowboy church on Sunday.  Whatever the activity, it is definitely the culture center of Lick Skillet. And it is always a good clean family place to enjoy entertainment and pizza.  Legend has it that a fight broke out at a general merchandise store that occupied the spot back in the 1920’s or 1930’s. The store was owned by the grandfather of a local celebrity, Bill Malone. One of his relatives whacked somebody over the head with a skillet that ended the brawl. Therefore, somebody got “licked with a skillet.”  There was at one time a public school to the north of Lick Skillet that was called New Sharon.  For years, it was a standing joke that anyone who attended the school attended LSU…Lick Skillet University.

A Breath of Fresh Air!

I

love, love, love Southern Hills. Having grown up in Kansas City, and remembering the beautiful estates that lined the Ward Parkway area on the way to the Country Club Plaza, Southern Hills takes me back to my childhood. My memories are filled with homes in areas full of beautiful trees (and I’m talking trees large enough to tell the history of the area), homes that speak volumes of success and comfort! This is where you want to live if you desire the best of both worlds, beauty/nature, and homes with character. The sprawling ranches that sit atop these lush treed lots are homes I have admired over the last 30 years living here in Springfield. Quiet and friendly, this area is a prized possession of our Springfield community.
