Utilizing Our Natural Resourses

T

he days will soon be cooling off and the smell of camp fires will be in the air. If you’re looking for an escape to the wilderness, it’s closer than you think. The Long Leaf Horse Camp and Trails are located between Laurel and Richton, about 30 minutes from Petal and up Hwy 42, and then a left onto Hwy 15, entering into the Chickasawhay District of The DeSoto National Forest. This is not to be confused with The Longleaf Trace, “Rails to Trails”.

This is one of my favorite places to get away to. I can hear the wind wooing me from on top of the Longleaf pines, to go a little deeper into the nature to clear the clutter from my mind. It doesn’t get much better than when I’m out there in the woods on my loyal mount with a group of friends. Hope you enjoy. “Life is good”.

Fishtown at Leland

O

n the way back from Northport yesterday on beautiful M-22, I treated myself to a glass of iced tea and some munchies at The Cove restaurant at the dam in Leland. It was truly a relaxing respite listening and watching the beautiful green waters from Lake Leelanau spilling over the dam on its way to Lake Michigan and Leland Harbor. Visiting historic Fishtown and its quaint shops, taking in all the old buildings and boats, and watching tourists and a wedding party truly made my day. Of course, I could not leave Fishtown until I stopped by Carlson’s Smoke House and got myself a piece of smoked whitefish! Pure Michigan!

Arab City Schools

L

achun and I are proud to call Arab home! My parents finally settled here when I was 16 from Biloxi and Lachun was actually born here. We can both brag about our schools first hand because it’s where we went and where our kids are going now. Arab City Schools offers one of the best school districts in Alabama, ranking fourth highest in the state in standardized test scores. The school district focuses on preparing young people for future careers, partnering with local colleges to provide dual enrollment programs for college credit. If you’re looking for a new place to live and especially if you have kids, give our town a look! I think you’ll like what you see.
