Life in Fishkill

H

aving grown up in Fishkill, and then living there for more than 35 years, I feel a special attachment to this village. I now reside in East Fishkill so I haven’t gone that far, but there is a charm about Fishkill that is unmatched in all of Dutchess County. I know what you’re thinking, Fishkill? What the heck kind of name is that for a town, you folks have something against fish? Well, you see Fishkill was settled by the Dutch and “Kill” in Dutch means “Creek”. Simply put, we had a creek full of fish, hence the name Fishkill.

The village offers an eclectic mix of buildings, some pre-date the Revolutionary War, and, yes, Washington did sleep here! But, don’t be fooled by its old façade. Fishkill is truly a thriving, fun, energetic place to live…Fishkill and the surrounding area are part of the Wappingers Central School District, a very sought after award winning, school system. Always receives high marks on every educational ranking system I have ever seen.

This is also an excellent commuter location, being only a five minute drive to interstate 84 and a 10-15 minute ride to the Metro North station in Beacon. If you are looking for a great place to live, you should put Fishkill on your short list!
