Battle Creek – More Than a TV Show

I

f you are anything like me, you get excited when someone recognizes your hometown – in a movie, in the news or on TV. Battle Creek has made news headlines for years as the “Cereal Capital of the World” with Kellogg’s, Post/Kraft Foods and Ralston all claiming our city as their home base and starting point.

But, even though we are big in the food industry, Battle Creek has many other claims to fame. We were known for years as the “Health City” and the home of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. In the late 1800’s, the Battle Creek Sanitarium was a worldwide destination for those seeking a healthy retreat with diet and exercise. In fact, you might even call us one of the original “spa” destinations in Michigan!

About five weeks ago, CBS released a new series on Sunday nights titled simply “Battle Creek”. It’s a combination of drama and a bit of saucy comedy between an old school cop and a new tech FBI agent, with our fair city as the backdrop. Conceived and written by Vince Gilligan and David Shore (“Breaking Bad” and “House”), this show has many of us hooked on the mere fact that this is about OUR city, OUR hometown, with OUR name as the title! The opening credits show parts of Downtown Battle Creek, the BC Bombers, Cruise the Gut, and our stone sign that welcomes visitors into our city at the end of the 194 expressway.

I must confess, that I went to the Red Carpet premiere and have not missed an episode in the past 5 Sundays. Battle Creek may not be a household word, yet – but I’m sure we are well on our way. Stay tuned for more episodes, we are in season 1 and the best is coming!

The City of Youngsville

A

small group of Acadian farmers in the 1800’s chose the area now known as Youngsville to settle and raise their crops and children. Much like the city today, the growth back then was also great enough to declare this settlement a village in 1863.

In 1983, Youngsville was declared a town and through the 1990’s this growth caused Youngsville to be the fastest growing town elevating it in 2005 to become its own city. Youngsville’s contemporary lifestyles and perfect mix of agriculture and metro-enterprise, along with great leadership and citizens who truly enjoy making it work, have kept Youngsville the fastest growing city in the state ever since.

When studying communities for their rankings, Yahoo takes into consideration factors like household income, education and crime rates. With 36.8% of adults having had achieved a Bachelor’s degree or better, an average household income of $67,147, and a minuscule crime rate of 2.67 per 1000 residents, Youngsville was named the best place to live in Louisiana by Yahoo in 2011.

With all this being said, I can’t think of a better place for you to call home. Please come search the subdivisions located in and around Youngsville and see the wonderful selection of homes available for you to enjoy the city and start living the dream yourself.

Exquisite Fall Foliage in Highland Lakes

A

utumn is the perfect time of year for Highland Lakes to show off just how spectacular this community is. The oak trees are on fire with blazes of crimson red, burnt orange, gold, and chocolate browns. Nestled on the south side of Oak Mountain and down the valley, Eddleman Properties did an amazing job developing the 1700 acres where Highland Lakes is located. It’s easy to see why this gated community is so highly sought after.

If you talk to a resident of Highland Lakes, you’re likely to hear a glowing report of why they love living in this Shelby County neighborhood. Home prices range from 250K to $2 million, so many residents just move two or three streets over when it’s time to downsize or upsize to their next home purchase! The tree-lined streets, sidewalks, lakes, parks and walking trails are just some of the reasons this gated neighborhood is at the top of the list of many locals’ wish lists. Just 16 miles from Birmingham, AL, Highland Lakes is a must-see…especially in the fall!

Fall Back

D

aylight savings time – spring ahead and fall back. Oh yes, fall is back! I could only wonder as I look yonder and see geese frolic in the water under the diminishing sun. I think summer is done. No more chasing the ice cream truck and Mister Softee closed for the season. No “you screaming, I screaming, we all scream for ice cream.” The chill is in the air, the trees starting to go bare. For the moment, enjoy the different color hues; partly green, orange, yellows, oh, and I got the blues! It’s okay, I’ll hope and dream. Summer is not that far off, so it seems. I’ll bid you an adieu, farewell, so long until we meet again. This one’s for summer, my dear friend.
