Spring Bluefish Run

T

he phone rang the other day just after dinner and it was my son calling to let me know he was at the end of my street in Pine Beach bailing 6 – 10 pound Bluefish. So I trundled down there after alerting some key neighbors and indeed the two boys were hooking one fish after another. Great to see this much life along the waterfront in Pine Beach! Shhhh…now don’t tell anyone this is a new local fisherman’s secret!

Providence, My Walkable Village

W

hen strolling down the streets of Providence, I have this distinct feeling of walking in Paris. Let me explain. For more than a decade the City of Lights was my home and I literally walked everywhere. Well, in Providence, I have become a walker again. I love it! I can walk to a restaurant, to the beauty salon or to the dry cleaners.

How I relish my daily walks! I know it is great for my health, but it is also wonderful for the soul. I start off by admiring the shops and restaurants in the town center.

Then I go on the nature trail. While there, I try to identify the various trees, insects and flowers. I love being serenaded by the birds. Then I walk to my favorite bridge. I call it the Lizard Bridge because it’s decorated with little lizards. I always take a moment to look at the creek and reflect on God’s creation.

Finally, my journey leads me to walk in the community and admire the new Southern style architecture. I especially love the houses with the white picket fences and the generous porches. I also love the Federal Style Townhouses. Well, to be quite honest with you, I just love Providence!

Life in Fishkill

H

aving grown up in Fishkill, and then living there for more than 35 years, I feel a special attachment to this village. I now reside in East Fishkill so I haven’t gone that far, but there is a charm about Fishkill that is unmatched in all of Dutchess County. I know what you’re thinking, Fishkill? What the heck kind of name is that for a town, you folks have something against fish? Well, you see Fishkill was settled by the Dutch and “Kill” in Dutch means “Creek”. Simply put, we had a creek full of fish, hence the name Fishkill.

The village offers an eclectic mix of buildings, some pre-date the Revolutionary War, and, yes, Washington did sleep here! But, don’t be fooled by its old façade. Fishkill is truly a thriving, fun, energetic place to live…Fishkill and the surrounding area are part of the Wappingers Central School District, a very sought after award winning, school system. Always receives high marks on every educational ranking system I have ever seen.

This is also an excellent commuter location, being only a five minute drive to interstate 84 and a 10-15 minute ride to the Metro North station in Beacon. If you are looking for a great place to live, you should put Fishkill on your short list!

Experiencing the Beauty of Every Season

I

must admit, one of the reasons that I love the South Jersey Shore is that we get to experience all of the seasons. Winters in Cape May are pristine. It is a beauty to behold when the snow falling throughout our Victorian town sugar coats the charm that already exists. The seaside landscape takes on a new dimension with frozen icebergs smothering the ocean waves and back bay areas turning to huge ice ponds. It’s rare that we have extreme winter weather like we had this year and it brings back childhood memories of ice skating and sledding down the sides of the bridges which were our only hills. Activities are meaningful – fireside songs, sing-alongs, yoga classes, art courses, traditional dinners and winter balls. Outside fire pits to warm the body, heart and soul offered by wineries, fireside music and social gatherings bringing even more ambiance to the town. Nature lovers and birders convene on the frozen tundra watching for snowy owls, red tailed hawks and bald eagles. Stepping around the frozen salted slabs of ice searching for Cape May Diamonds and sea glass. Yes, winter is a wonder! Then we step into spring – another season full of beauty and we get to walk through its delight with fresh openings and events. Come see for yourself!
